Review
The Marin Fairfax SC5 is a stealthy black commuting bike perfect for ghosting undetected through a traffic snarl in any condition mother nature may throw at you. It features a lightweight combination of alloy frame and carbon fork which are perfect for the abuse dished out by a typical urban cyclist and the potholed roads they may ride.
The frame is well thought out and features fender and pannier mounts, plenty of room for some big tires and a geometry which allows a comfortable position (basically a tall head tube). The Fairfax also comes with a security skewer system for the wheels and seatpost to prevent theft.
Components have been switched to the SRAM Via group with double chainrings. The wide ratios of this drivetrain offer plenty of options around town but may limit the appeal to a trekking cyclist looking for a 'granny gear'. The use of hydraulic brakes, in my opinion a great call, also speak volumes of the Fairfax being an urban weapon, not a trekking machine. Then again Marin announce this bike as a commuter so it's a moot point really!
Overall the Fairfax line are great city/commuting bikes with this model being the most performance orientated. Great looks, great components and an ability to confront the urban environment head-on without shirking. Commute and look cool...what more is there to say?
The Marin Fairfax SC5 is a very capable urban machine. With parts from Avid, SRAM, and Selle Royale, this bike is perfect for the concrete canyons or the open road. Marin's sport-oriented geometry means a quick and confident ride.
