Review
GT have shaken up their trail bike for 2014 with the introduction of the new Sensor. This bike features a completely redesigned frame which, while sticking to the independent drivetrain concept, improves overall suspension performance. This model is the "Elite" which is the entry level alloy bike, and as such, comes kitted with components designed to work reliably rather than be the cutting edge of performance and weight.
The frame has 130mm travel so is more than capable of any trail riding antics you might want to embark upon. Match that to the 27.5" wheels and you have a bike that is truly moving with the times. This is a very good bike in almost any condition.
Probably my first impression was that this bike looks much more streamlined and just plain better than previous versions! As with other independent drivetrain bikes there is a lot going on with linkages and pivots, so if you are someone who avoids regular bike maintenance it is something to keep in mind. Amazingly the Elite weighs in around the 13kg mark which is impressive for an entry level bike, particularly with the complex bottom bracket area.
Suspension duties are carried out by Rock Shox and Fox so no corners cut there, and the drivetrain is a triple (yeah?) Shimano Deore setup which will run forever and ever.
The independent drivetrain separates pedaling from the suspension action so the Sensor should be a great climbing (and generally pedaling) bike. This technology actually assists the suspension in many ways and first impressions have been of a solid all rounder in a variety of terrains.
If you're looking for a cutting edge trail bike with the latest in suspension design and some sweet looks and gear, check out the Sensor Elite. If you have a bit of cash you would be crazy to miss the carbon versions as well....they look even better!
The GT Sensor Elite is a fun and stable trail bike both up and down the mountain. The hydroformed alloy frame forms the backbone of this rig; the performance of its carbon siblings but at a more affordable price. Plush suspension components from Rock Shox and Fox, along with a Shimano drivetrain and parts from Kore and Continental, round out this capable package.
