Review

I find it quite ironic that the aircraft designed to be the most secretive, invisible, fly under the radar and hard to detect is also the most recognised aircraft in modern history. I am talking, of course, about the stealth bomber. Its angular, brutal appearance that looks like the hammered out product from a blacksmith's forge also represents the cutting edge in aerospace technology.

It is a similar case with the BMC TimeMachine (road) bikes. These angular arrowhead bikes feature the very latest in aerodynamic technology, so much so that you could throw on a set of aero bars and think you were riding a no-compromise TT or triathlon bike. The geometry and short wheelbase is straight from a time trial bike design handbook, but this bike is so much more than that. This is a true aerodynamic road bike that may ask the question of many cyclists and triathletes: Do I need a specific bike for TT or Tri?

The TMR01 and 02 are both designed for the road, and while they borrow heavily from their specific time trial siblings, they have compromises which make them suitable for many cyclists. The superb chassis dynamics, bottom bracket stiffness and aero design touches result in a bike perfect for sitting on the front on the flats, doing some efforts in a big gear or even sprinting. The TMR won't dash out of the gate instantly, but once wound up it is hard to stop.

The harsh, angular arrowhead spears straight and true even when pushed as hard as possible. The steering is relatively neutral, stable and confident. Reports have been that in spite of the angular and squared tube forms the bike rides rough roads with a surprising level of comfort. Not a sportive bike to be sure, but hardly the harsh TT rig that it looks either.

This particular bike is the TMR02, which uses a lower level, and therefore heavier, carbon lay-up than the top line TMR01. It is also much more affordable. The groupset is Ultegra, with Shimano wheels and BMC branded cockpit; apart from the well chosen Fizik Arione saddle. A weight of just over 8kg puts it slightly heavier than many competitor's aero road bikes, but the TMR02 compromises less than most and as such this is not a climber's bike.

Overall, the TMR02 is a purposeful no compromise road bike. Great for a roleur or sprinter, or a triathlete or road cyclist that doesn't want (or can't afford) two bikes. The TMR02 is the stealth bomber of road bikes. The sharp spearhead form represents the pinnacle of aero road bike technology without a teardrop to be seen. It certainly won't hide in the crowd either.
